Abstract
This article expands, corrects, and reconstructs Walt Whitman’s Williams lineage as outlined by William Pannapacker’s “Genealogy Appendix” in LeMaster and Kummings, eds., Walt Whitman: An Encyclopedia (1998). The authors’ extensive genealogical research documents nine generations in the Williams line in the Oyster Bay area, four more than Pannapacker’s. The results should encourage further research into Whitman’s diverse ancestral families.
