Is There a Text in This Grass?

Author:

Abstract

Responds to Mark Baurerlein's article ("The Written Orator of 'Song of Myself'") by describing the author's own work with Whitman's poetry and "Speech Act" theory; qualifies Bauerlein's assertions and takes issue with Bauerlein's skepticism toward the claim that, as Hollis rephrases it, "the printing of a speech carries (…) the illocutionary force of the original."
