Abstract
Suggests that the likeliest source for Whitman's understanding of certain scientific phenomena-especially geological and astronomical-was popular journalist Robert Chamber's anonymously published Vestiges of the Natural History of Creation (1844), and compares relevant passages from Whitman and Chambers.
