Whitman on War: Four Poems from Drum-Taps

Author:

Abstract

Argues against previous critics' claims that the "order in which the poems appear in Leaves of Grass is of dubious significance" by demonstrating how four poems from Drum-Taps-"Cavalry Crossing a Ford," "Bivouac on a Mountain Side," "An Army Corps on the March," and "By the Bivouac's Fitful Flame"-form a coherent sequence.
