Explores the various and often contradictory views Whitman expressed over time about literary culture, heritage, genres, and canonicity; following Pierre Bourdieu, describes the "discourse of distinction" by which Whitman negotiates the "double logic" of desiring "distinction from the culturally distinguished literary modes
