Explores "Whitman's role in shaping James's thought" and evaluates "Whitman's place in the pragmatist tradition," emphasizing the role of aesthetics in pragmatism and offering a pragmatic reading of "Song of the Broad-Axe" based on "Jamesian pluralism."
