Abstract
Assesses the extent of Whitman's influence on Chinese poet Ai Qing (1910-1996), showing how, although Ai Qing lacks Whitman's "all encompassing ego," Whitman's influence is significant, leading Ai Qing to "introduce prose elements" into his work and thus open new ground for contemporary Chinese poetry.
