Abstract
Reads Lebanese poet Adonis' (Ali Ahmed Sa'id, 1930- ) long poem The Funeral of New York in its English and French translations as a "violently anti-American" work in the prophetic mode, suggesting that Whitman's explicit appearance in section nine elicits a sympathy that is ultimately subsumed by Adonis' invective.
