Abstract
Examines the relationship between Whitman and his 1881 Boston publisher, James Ripley Osgood, emphasizing their early acquaintance at Pfaff's beer hall in New York and re-examining the 1882 controversy over the "banning" of Leaves of Grass in Boston.
