Abstract

Examines Whitman's attitude toward the visual arts and toward contemporary and historical beliefs about the relation between poetry and painting, focusing especially upon Whitman's relation to art patron William Cullen Bryant and sculptor Henry Kirke Brown, and upon how Whitman "boldly reconfigured the transgenre appeal of the sister arts."
