Abstract
Provides a historical background of the London (1851) and New York (1853) Crystal Palace Exhibitions and, situating Whitman's response in relation to global contemporaries including Dostoevsky and Benjamin, argues for the importance of Whitman's attendance at the New York exhibition as an influence on Leaves of Grass.
