Abstract

Examines how "the battle lines drawn by the Civil War intensified the split between the ideas of individualism and union," and describes alternate contexts for the war offered by Whitman in Drum-Taps, stressing the potentially negative effects of the North's victory as creating conditions for an overly-centralized political authority and a conformist production of human individuality.
