Abstract
Traces Thomas Wentworth Higginson's gradual evolution from enemy and detractor of Whitman's poetry to seemingly enthusiastic supporter of at least some of Whitman's work; analyzes extracts from Higginson's correspondence regarding Whitman and proposes reasons for the critic's change of heart.
