Art as a Tool in Science Communication

Abstract

This piece explores the value of engaging the public in conversations about science and diversity. While painting a park bench with images that reflect diversity in science, strangers of all ages and walks of life approached to discuss the art and the meaning behind the design. Each conversation took on a life of its own, each one added a different colorful shade. The objective of this project was to create a public piece of art that would hopefully connect to passersby the importance of diversity in science. But by the end of the project it was clear that the process of painting, in a sea of curious strangers, can make a meaningful impact.
