Abstract

FoRIM (Future Research in the Making) is a podcast-based project that interviews individuals from diverse backgrounds in STEM and research experience levels, ranging from undergraduate to Ph.D. The podcast explored the individual's research focus, the motivation behind their research, the challenges they faced, their accomplishments, what each individual dislikes about research, and offered advice, among other topics. The aim of this project was to help students who are not in research learn more about what others do and possibly take their first steps into research. The project lasted approximately five months. After identifying individuals from different areas of STEM, I requested an interview and created a set list of questions. Before I started interviewing, I created an Instagram and Spotify account to promote and publish the podcast. Overall, I interviewed eight individuals, had a total of 1,267 Instagram views, twenty-one followers on Instagram, seventy-two interactions on the Instagram account, and thirty-seven streams on Spotify. To conclude, the FoRIM podcast project offered science communication through research and personal experiences. No research area is the same, and the podcast demonstrates that there are numerous versatile areas of research to explore. You just need a little push. By emphasizing this, the podcast directly supports its goal of guiding students to take their first step into research, showing that getting started doesn’t require a perfect path, just the willingness to begin.
