Abstract
The Pictures of Health poster series was produced in response to the apparent and increasing prevalence of medical misinformation permeating the United States in recent years. The series' main goal was to create simple, fun posters highlighting important wellness topics for kids to combat misinformation and help children develop a better understanding of themselves and their health. Topics were chosen after an assessment of the key health issues amongst kids of elementary and middle school age groups was performed by literary review as well as subjective analysis, with the three chosen issues being diet and relationships with food, vaccination, and mental health. Once topics were selected and thoroughly researched, graphics and analogies were designed that would explain them at an appropriate level for the target demographics. Each poster was also accompanied by a more in-depth scientific article made digitally available for parents, teachers, or older children who want to learn more about the subject. Since their completion in April 2024, the Pictures of Health posters have been posted in over 20 Iowa elementary and middle schools and utilized by the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics at mental health events. The posters and articles remain digitally available for free to the public for access and printing and continue to be shared with elementary educators to use in their classrooms.
