How to Build an App: Lessons from My Food Rating Project

Abstract

This article presents the development of a food rating system, which is designed to help people rate the restaurants they attend. The goal of this project was to create an app that allows for users to rate the restaurants based on personalized categories, which could then be compared to other users ratings and offer restaurant suggestions. I conducted a survey asking my community how likely they were to use this application, because it is common between me and my friends to struggle with deciding on where to go out to eat. The result of the survey shows that the community has significant interest in the project, with an average rating of 4.73 stars out of 5 for likelihood to use the app, this validates the need for such a tool. The design process involved creating a flexible algorithm that adjusts the weighting of categories (food flavor, mouth feel, price per portion, menu variety, restaurant atmosphere) based on user input. The mathematical model used allows for quick and accurate ratings by calculating category-specific weights and applying them to user-provided scores. The result is a system that fairly evaluates a wide range of restaurant types, from fast food to upscale dining. Initial feedback from users has been positive, affirming the effectiveness of the system. The project’s future includes improvements in the user interface and the addition of social media features, such as profiles and restaurant suggestions based on shared ratings. This article demonstrates how simple algorithmic thinking and user-centered design can address everyday problems, providing a powerful tool for personalized restaurant recommendations.
