About

Salud is an undergraduate magazine seeking creative work in Spanish that explores themes of health, illness, and healing.  We welcome fiction and nonfiction narratives, poetry, and visual art. Writing health narratives can help to process experiences with health, illness and healing. Sharing these narratives can give voice to experiences that might otherwise go unsaid, build empathy and compassion, and allow for understanding across personal and community differences. Creating health narratives in Spanish for publication can motivate students to think beyond the classroom environment and address their work to broader audiences.

Submissions will open December 1st, 2023 and will close May 15, 2024.

Focus and Scope

The goal of Salud is to motivate undergraduates to write health narratives in Spanish for audiences beyond their classrooms and teachers. Writing health narratives can help to process experiences with health, illness and healing. Sharing these narratives can give voice to experiences that might otherwise go unsaid, build empathy and compassion, and allow for understanding across personal and community differences. Doing that to an audience rather than just a professor enables a connection to a broader community.

A personal story based on lived experiences related to health, illness, or healing. For example, a first-person experience or that of a close friend, family, or loved one; of eating disorders, cancer, sports injuries, COVID-19 pandemic-era experiences, grief; narratives of addiction, mental illness, death, or aging. Stories may be fiction or nonfiction, but must be clearly marked as one or the other.
