Abstract
The following article, with illustrations, is from the New York Daily Graphic (1873 to 1889). It was the first in the field of illustrated journalism. The Des Moines article appeared on September 17, 1878, at a time when the Capital City was forging to the forefront as the "metropolis" of Iowa. The article emphasized the growth, prosperity, and enterprise of Des Moines and its citizens.
