Submission Policies

Who Can Submit?

Doctoral students who have been nominated by their mentors to present their research at the Graduate Research Session at NAEA’s annual convention may submit to Marilyn Zurmuehlen Working Papers in Art Education. Students can come from any discipline as long as their research is related to visual art education.

General Submission Rules

Submissions to the journal are invited annually. Submissions should be limited to 5,000 words (not including abstract or references). The abstract should be limited to 150–200 words. Please see details below regarding copyright and fair use of images. Submissions may be entered through the Start Submission link in the top menu. All submitted essays are read and evaluated by expert readers who have been part of the Marilyn Zurmuehlen Working Papers in the past. A decision about publication is generally made within two months of submission.

By submitting material to Marilyn Zurmuehlen Working Papers in Art Education, the author is warranting that the material has not been previously published, is not currently under review at another journal, and that the material will not be submitted to another journal until the completion of the editorial decision process at Marilyn Zurmuehlen Working Papers in Art Education. Please note: "publication" in a working-paper series or an institutional or disciplinary repository does not constitute prior publication. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce any material in which they do not own copyright, to be used in print and electronic media and for ensuring that the appropriate acknowledgements are included in their manuscript. Prior to publication authors must clear the necessary reproduction rights for any images, photos, figures, music, or content credited to a third party that they wish to use, which fall outside of the fair use provisions described in U.S. copyright law. We request that our authors seek nonexclusive, worldwide rights in all formats and media, for one-time use from the rights holder of the material to be used. Upon submission, authors agree that the material does not infringe upon the intellectual property rights of third parties.

Formatting Requirements for Initial Submission

Submissions to Marilyn Zurmuehlen Working Papers in Art Education should be double spaced. Pages should be numbered consecutively and should include a short title in the header. APA formatting following the latest manual of style is necessary. There are formatting requirements for final manuscripts submitted to Marilyn Zurmuehlen Working Papers in Art Education.

Manuscript Review Policy

Manuscripts will have a blind review by at least two scholars. Every effort will be made to notify authors within 90 days of submission concerning the reviewers' recommendations and comments. Marilyn Zurmuehlen Working Papers in Art Education has no page charges.
