The Friends of the University Libraries will present their second annual Chautauqua April 21, 22, and 23, 1994. Entitled "In Celebration of the Book: From Author to Reader," this three day festival begins at 3:30 on Thursday, April 21, in the North Lobby of the Main Library with a discussion by author Patricia Hampl, illustrator Steve Sorman, publisher Scott Walker, and reader Doug Brown. David Hamilton of the University's English Department will serve as moderator as they address the questions of collaboration in producing a literary work. A reception signifying the opening of the exhibition "Good Books: Authors, Books, and Readers" will follow at 5:00 p.m.

On Friday, April 22, the thirtieth anniversary dinner of the Friends of the University of Iowa Libraries will be held in the Triangle Ballroom of the Iowa Memorial Union. To begin with a social hour at 5:30 and dinner at 6:00 this will be followed by a public presentation in the Main Lounge at 8:00 p.m. by former Iowa English professor and author David Morrell.

A Literary Fair will open festivities on Saturday, April 23, to run from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the North Lobby. "Aspects of Creating a Literary Work" will feature artists and book conservators focusing on the art of creating a book. Janice Frey, printing specialist, will demonstrate letter press printing; Tim Barrett of the University Center for the Book will present his techniques for papermaking; Pam Spitzmueller, University Conservator, will lead her staff in demonstrating the craft of hand book binding and reveal various steps in book conservation. Glen Epstein, associate professor in the Division of Continuing Education, will demonstrate the art of calligraphy and David Schoonover, Curator of Rare Books, will offer a multi-media presentation entitled "Rare Books: Old and New Approaches" in the Information Arcade.

The Literary Fair will also feature an exhibition of books created and published by Iowa City school children. In recent years many of the elementary schools have developed publication centers which guide each child in creating a book from story idea to final binding. There will also be a book sale of children's and young adult literature.

Friends will operate the Chautauqua Cafe throughout the morning selling beverages, pastries, quiche, and muffins to enable "fair" goers to pause between their perusals of the presentations.

The Iowa City Community Band will present their first concert of the season as the culminating event of this celebration at 12:00 noon in the North Lobby. They will feature music reminiscent of Chautauquas of the past.
