The Annals of Iowa has won an Award of Excellence from the American Association for State and Local History for the Fall 2021 Issue that celebrated the 175th Anniversary of Iowa's Statehood. 

Nominators praised the award as making "substantial contributions to understandings of Iowa’s diverse past and notable advances in making the past more meaningful and accessible to all." They also highlighted the issue's innovative efforts to place Iowa artists and historians in conversations through the curation of 11 commissioned essays and 17 original pieces by Iowa artists.
