Abstract

William Salter (1821-1910) was born at Brooklyn, New York, the son of William Frost Salter (1787-1849) and Mary Ewen Salter (1787-1851), and a descendant of John Salter, supposed to emigrated from near Exeter, England, ca. 1680 and settled at Rye, New Hampshire. He taught school and then attended Union Theological Seminary at at New York City and a Seminary at Andover. He was ordained a minister and sent to Jackson County, Iowa, in 1843. He married Mary A. Mackintire, whom he had met before leaving for the west in 1846 at Charleston, Massachusetts. They had two sons. The family lived at Burlington, Iowa, where he was pastor, 1846-1910.;"Published works by Dr. Salter": pages 64-66 at end.
