Abstract

SCOTT PATE studies the story of Charles Aikins, a World War I captain who led the local Iowa National Guard based in Winterset as it prepared for and eventually served in Europe. In particular, his research illuminates how chemical weapons challenged expectations of military service and created longstanding challenges for survivors. He also explores how this new approach to warfare indirectly affected the rural Iowa community of Winterset.
