Abstract

JEFFREY P. STONE explores Roger W. Babson’s Cold War efforts to transcend state boundaries and relocate all of American industry away from the coasts to a “Magic Circle” at the very center of the nation. Iowans’ disinterest in the failed effort demonstrate the importance of state loyalties, the role of state-based industrial boosterism, and the reasons for the failure of larger postwar decentralization efforts.
