Abstract

MARY JO NISSEN examines the complex series of events that followed Jasper County resident John Cool’s murder of his brother-in-law in 1883. Cool’s trial and efforts to secure a pardon for Cool illustrate key developments in the use of the insanity defense, the role of public opinion in sentencing, the care of the destitute, and especially the involvement of governors in the resolution of criminal cases.
